Installations for an Unknown Space'
Henry Babbage & Nell May

Originally produced for Window's curated show,
'In Any Case', at the Ostrale'011 festival in Dresden.

A second set was later installed at the Elam School of Fine Arts Library.

There are five installation scenarios, these scenarios should be attempted according to the following hierarchy:

1. Slanted surface installation
2. Window installation
3. Beam installation
4. Pillar installation
5. Vertical surface installation

In the instance where an installation scenario is impossible, the next installation scenario in the hierarchy must be attempted. A maximum of three different installation scenarios may be installed. Any posters that are unable to be installed in compliance with their stated instructions should instead be placed on a table in the gallery space in piles respective to their scenario.

Text instructions on the posters:

'Scenario 1: Slanted Surface Installation' :
4 posters supplied

For the purpose of this installation scenario a 'slanted surface' is defined as a continuous structure that is not at a right angle to the floor. The beginning and end points of a slanted surface are signified by a change in gradient, a doorway, a window or another artist's work.

Installation instructions:
1. The poster(s) must be hung from the halfway point of the slanted surface length.
2. Install two hooks on the wall; hook 1 must be 50mm from the beginning point of the slanted surface and hook 2 must be 50mm from the end point of the slanted surface. The poster(s) must be hung from a cable secured from hook 1 to hook 2, (please note that additional hooks may need to be evenly distributed to keep the cable level).
3. The poster(s) must be centred horizontally from the beginning and end points of the slanted wall surface.
4. On either end of the slanted surface there must be a minimum of 900mm between the end of the slanted surface and the closest poster.
5. In the case of multiple posters, they must be spaced 180mm apart from each other.
6. Compliance with the above instructions defines the number of posters installed.

'Scenario 2: Window Installation' :
6 posters supplied

When a minimum of one window exists in a wall a window installation scenario is possible. For the purpose of this installation scenario a ‘wall’ is defined as a flat continuous vertical structure; the beginning and end points of a wall are signified by a doorway, another artist’s work, an intruding structural feature or a change in direction of the wall.

Installation instructions:
1. The top of the poster(s) must be hung parallel to the top of the window frame. In the case of windows situated at different heights or in the case of multiple rows of windows along one wall, choose the highest window (or window set) to align the posters.
2. Install two brackets to the wall; bracket 1 must be 50mm from the beginning point of the wall and bracket 2 must be 50mm from the end point of the wall. However, if an end point is dictated by another artist’s work then there must be a minimum of 900mm between the bracket and the artist’s work. The poster(s) must be hung from a cable secured from bracket 1 to bracket 2.
3. The poster(s) must be centred horizontally between bracket 1 and bracket 2.
4. On either end of the cable there must be a minimum of 900mm between the end of the cable and the closest poster.
5. In the case of multiple posters, they must be spaced 180mm apart from each other.
6. Compliance with the above instructions defines the number of posters installed.

'Scenario 3: Beam installation' :
10 posters supplied

For the purpose of this installation scenario a 'beam' is defined as a horizontal support structure. The beginning and end points of the beam are signified by the beam meeting either a wall or pillar.

Installation instructions:

1. Install two hooks to the underside of the beam; these hooks must be at the centre of the width of the beam's surface. Hook 1 must be 50mm from the beginning point of the beam and hook 2 must be 50mm from the end point of the beam. The poster(s) must be hung from a cable secured from hook 1 to hook 2, (please note that additional hooks may need to be evenly distributed to keep the cable level).
2. The poster(s) must be hung off only one beam.
3. In the case of multiple posters, they must be spaced 180mm apart from each other.
4. Each poster must be hung with a duplicate poster facing the opposite direction.
5. On either end of the beam there must be a minimum of 900mm between the end of the beam and the closest poster.
6. Compliance with the above instructions defines the number of posters installed.

'Scenario 4: Pillar Installation' :
6 posters supplied

For the purpose of this installation scenario a ‘pillar’ is defined as a vertical structure used as a support for a building, or as an ornament or monument.

1. The poster(s) must be applied with glue and wrapped to the surface of the pillar. If the pillar has multiple faces then the left vertical edge of the poster must be pasted at the centre of the width of a face.
2. The top of the poster(s) must be glued at a height of 1940mm on the pillar. However, when a pillar has a dividing structural element that imposes on this installation height then the top of the poster(s) must instead be glued 220mm below that structural element.
3. A maximum of one poster is to be installed per pillar.
4. Compliance with the above instructions defines the number of posters installed.

Scenario 5: Vertical Surface Installation :
10 posters supplied

For the purpose of this installation scenario a ‘vertical surface’ is defined as a continuous vertical structure. The beginning and end points of the vertical surface are signified by either a doorway, a window or another artist’s work. Any irregularity in the wall (e.g. a pipe, uneven surface, corners or intruding pillars) does not constitute an end point; posters must be applied over irregularities.

1. The poster(s) must be glued to the vertical surface.
2. The top of the poster(s) must be glued at a height of 1940mm on the vertical surface. However, when a horizontal division (e.g. a change in paint colour or surface material) exists on a vertical surface, the bottom of the poster(s) must instead be glued 220mm above the division line.
3. The poster(s) must be centred horizontally between the beginning and end points of the vertical surface.
4. On either end of the vertical surface there must be a minimum of 900mm between the end of the vertical surface and the closest poster.
5. In the case of multiple posters, they must be spaced 180mm apart from each other.
6. Compliance with the above instructions defines the number of posters installed.
